If you suddenly realize that more and more people you know started doing stand up paddle boarding, don’t be surprised because it is now one of the most popular water sports. If you are interested in the sport, be sure to give it a shot and you’ll know why so many people love it.

It’s important to get a paddle board that work well for you before you start to learn how to paddle board, and I’m sure you’ll have a lot of questions when trying to pick out your first board. In this post we will answer some of the most frequently asked questions by SUP beginners like you. After reading this post, you will probably have a general idea of the sport.

What is the best paddle board for beginners?

Typically we would recommend All-around boards for beginners. The size of an all-around paddle board is around 10’6’’*32’’*6’’. There’s a general rule of thumb for picking an inflatable paddle board, the wider the board the more stable it will be and the longer the board, the faster. Longer boards track better but won’t be as maneuverable as shorter boards.

So if you are not confident about your balance, then a wider board would probably suit you better. A wider board is more stable and maneuverable but usually slower, so it’s more suited to flat water paddling or other recreational SUP activities like yoga or fishing. With the extra amount of stability it offers, you won’t fall as easily as with a narrower board, it will give you confidence and ease on the water.

If you’ll be paddling leisure on flat water most of the time, an all-around board would be a great choice to start with. But if you see yourself doing SUP activities that require higher performance, like long-distance touring or racing, then it’s worth considering getting a touring board or even a race board. Touring and racing boards are usually much narrower and faster. It’s actually not that hard to balance on narrow boards, it might take some practice but is definitely not that hard as most people think it is.

What size paddle board do I need for my height?

This question is similiar to the first time, and so is the answer. If you are tall and thin, you can consider getting a wider board in order for you to balance on it more easily. Shorter paddlers can get narrower boards to gain more speed. But again, it all depends on how good your balancing skill is, what kind of SUP experience you are looking for or what kind of SUP activities you’ll be doing with your board. If you are tall but have good balancing skills and want to participate in a SUP race in the future, then it’s totally okay to get a narrow race board.

What’s the best paddle board?

This is a controversial question and I believe there’s no one right answer for this one. Different boards serve different purposes, and there are a lot of SUP board brands that make great paddle boards. If you want the ultimate high-performance board with the highest speed you can get, then you should probably look into hardboards. For recreational paddling, the best paddle board would probably be boards in an all-around shape which is relatively long and wide with a rounded nose.

What is the average cost of a paddle board?

For flat water paddling on calm waters, there’s no need to go for high end boards with a price tag over $800, most boards between 400-800 dollars are good enough for recreational uses. Manufacturers might have to find some corners to cut, but that doesn’t mean they are unusable. Most paddlers won’t be able to find any significant difference between an expensive board and a cheap one.

For long-distance cruising or racing or other similiar activities which require higher performance, you should probably look into the high end segment. You will find some high-end boards with advanced features like configurable fin setups, special shapes optimized for specific uses, and high-end materials like carbon fiber for construction enhancements. These boards can easily cost more than $1200.
